DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTERS (DPF)

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. The Euro 5 standards require modern diesel cars to pass strict emission limits, and all diesel cars produced since 2009 must comply with the legislation and need to have a functioning Diesel particulate filter.

Diesel Particulate Filters can become blocked when filtering the exhaust gas, causing a multitude of vehicle running problems. In theory, the DPF’s are designed to burn off the soot, through processes known as Passive Regeneration and Active Regeneration. This works most of the time perfectly and especially with regular motorway use, however, if you make lots of short journeys, the DPF may get blocked and require some help.

Whats the issue? You may feel a loss of power or warning lights appearing. Initially, we would suggest driving the car on the motorway and the car should auto-generate the filter as it is designed to do. If this fails, give us a call and we will take a look. A word of warning, do not ignore your DPF light for long periods as excessive soot build-up may require replacing the device.

DPF Regeneration
If you ignore the warning light your filter will continue to build up soot on the device and after it is 75% full other warning lights will start to appear. At this stage you should take your car to a garage as it will require a forced regeneration.

DPF Replacement
If you continue to use the car past this point and the level of soot increases to over 95% the DPF will need replacing as cleaning and regeneration will not be possible.
